WordPress 6.9 – What’s New In WordPress Core?

WordPress 6.9 “Gene”, was released on December 2nd.

Yesterday marked the release of WordPress 6.9, the final major release of 2025. It brings a mix of powerful editing tools, performance upgrades, developer-ready APIs, and collaboration features.

If you run a website, or manage multiple WordPress sites, 6.9 gives you more creative control, smoother workflows and a more future-ready foundation.

In this post, we will take a look at some of the key changes, improvements and fixes that 6.9 delivers. This is by no means an extensive deep dive, but instead offers a quick summary of some of the most interesting enhancements.

The WordPress Field Guide page for 6.9 states that the WordPress 6.9 release includes more than 400 tickets, including:

• >125 enhancements/feature requests.
• >250 bug fixes.
• >45 performance related tickets.
• >35 editor related tickets.
• 15 wp-admin focused tickets.

For the Gutenberg block editor, site editor and existing APIs 6.9 includes:

• 440 enhancements/feature requests.
• >570 bug fixes.

As ever, it is always impressive to see how active the global WordPress team is, and just how many fixes and improvements come with each and every release.

It definitely shows just how active the community is, and that the platform continues to evolve with support that few other CMS platforms can rival.

Performance

For those performance and SEO minded folk (me included), you’ll be glad to hear that WordPress 6.9 brings a host of performance improvements. All contributing to faster page loads, better Core Web Vitals, and smoother front-end performance.

Among other performance enhancing refinements, you can expect:

• Improved LCP, hooray!
• On-demand block CSS loading.
• Script loading with fetch priority, and the deprioritisation of non-critical scripts.
• Optimised database queries.
• Template output buffering.
• Caching refinements.

Usability & Accessibility

This release has over 30 accessibility focused improvements. It is good to see that WordPress 6.9 continues its commitment to a more accessible web.

The enhancements span a range of areas, including improved screen reader support, hiding unnecessary CSS content from assistive technology, cursor and typing focus adjustments.

Site Editing & Blocks

WordPress 6.9 boasts a richer and more flexible block editor. Some areas of note are:

• The introduction of several new core blocks, including ‘Accordion’, ‘Terms Query’, ‘Math’, ‘Comment Count’ and ‘Comment Link’ blocks. That means built-in tools for collapsible content, taxonomy-based lists, inline maths and more, without the need for extra plugins.
• Improved ‘Time-to-Read’ and ‘Heading’ blocks.
• An improved editing UI, including visual drag-and-drop (so you see exactly where a block will land), and more intuitive block rearrangement.
• Better layout and design tools, with features like ‘Fit Text’ (text that stretches to fill containers), improved gallery aspect ratio controls, and easier template/pattern insertion, that all help to make styling much more flexible.
• The new block-level ‘Notes’ feature, allows editors, writers, designers or any collaborators to leave comments directly on individual blocks. This is ideal for feedback, content reviews, or working asynchronously as a team. Threads can be resolved once addressed.
• Blocks can now be hidden from the live site (frontend) while still existing in the editor. This is great when you want to draft or stage content without deleting it or using plugins. Again, it just adds to the overall flexibility.
• The Command Palette (Ctrl/Cmd + K) is now available across the entire Admin dashboard, so you can quickly search or trigger actions without navigating menus.

Developer-Friendly Updates

6.9 isn’t just about better editing, it’s also a stronger, more performant and future-ready core under the hood:

• There is a brand-new Abilities API, which standardises how plugins, themes, and core register capabilities. This opens the door for more consistent integrations.
• There are enhancements to existing APIs, including an improved Interactivity API, Block Bindings API and DataViews. Developers have more flexibility binding data sources, customising block attributes, and building dynamic, data-driven sites.
