Multisite Implementation Options

Depending on your requirements and business structure, there are two main ways in which we can implement Multisite.

This will depend on whether your websites share a theme, or require individual themes.

For most of the businesses we work with, the multiple-theme option is more suitable. Giving them the flexibility to have visually distinct websites with differing functionality within their multisite network.

Standard Multisites

In a standard WordPress Multisite implementation, you add a single parent theme to the parent or hub site. Each child or sub site in the network is a clone of this hub site. These sites will all look alike and use the same plugins and functionality.

This means that you can do updates across the network just once for the entire network, including WordPress Core, plugin updates, or code pushes. Instead of doing it for each individual site.

The sites in this network may have unique domain names or share a domain. In the latter case, the sites that live under the primary parent site will live on subdomains.

Multiple Theme Multisites

What if you need your websites to look visually distinct from one another? What if you are a group with multiple sub-brands, each with its own unique branding, character and team?

Thankfully Multisite for WordPress doesn’t have to be restrictive when it comes to design and functionality.
