For publishers and websites that rely on advertisement money to support their commercial income, browser AdBlockers, privacy specialist browsers and rejecting Cookie Consent issues can cause an absolute nightmare.

Swipe and Deploy 59 blog hero image of cookies and a mug

62.85% of all browser usage is still Google Chrome, followed by 20% Safari. By default, these browsers don’t have ad blockers enabled, so the majority of users viewing your website should still see your adverts!

That’s a win if you sell ad space on your website. However, when users hit your website, you (should) prompt them with a cookie management tool. If they choose to reject advertising cookies, well that sucks.

Is There A Workaround?

As much as we want to force people to accept cookies, if they’ve been configured correctly, it should be a choice, and we cannot control that choice. Or can we?

Transfermarkt is a football news website that shares the market value of players and stats for football fans, and I’m guessing managers too. Even the keyboard Championship Manager 97/98 gamer managers too.

On first visiting their website the expected cookie consent banner appears, however in this instance, it provides 2 options.

  1. Continue with adverts, accepting cookies or,
  2. Pay a low-fee subscription which covers the cost of losing the advertising.

Yes, But What About Incognito?

Well if users press accept in incognito mode, they still see the adverts, but the tracking data won’t be fed back. But the adverts are still shown, which might help the report on accurate impressions, and hey, they might even still get a click.

Membership Can Be A Big Investment

Pushing people to become members and paying even a small fee can be a time-intensive and costly exercise. It is certainly not an overnight, simple update.

Yes, there are likely tools and plugins out there that promise the world, but we have yet to come across something perfect that works out of the box and is effective. I’d be keen to know anyone else’s experience here.

Many themes and templates might come with a plugin, but they tend to have compatibility issues with other plugins or tools deployed on the website. Creating more headaches than they cure.

So, easy method to #SwipeandDeploy? Not really. But a great idea for certain websites, for sure.

So What’s To Swipe & Deploy?

Today’s key takeaway is inspiration and examples of how other publishers are dealing with the struggle. This is an option that is out there. Those who do want to avoid paying for your content will likely click the accept option, and that’s what you’re trying to achieve.

If you are wondering about this from a GDPR perspective, etc, here is what the ICO have to say on the matter.

That’s a wrap for Swipe & Deploy 059 this week. Join me next time where I will share another insight or inspiration piece from around the web.
