Learn how an online retailer uses a resale value calculator that determines the second hand value of products to attract buyers in a saturated market.
Anyone who has ever bought baby products will quickly understand, they are expensive and you never need them for very long.
However, the second hand market for baby products is just as booming and you’re very likely to get a good price for your item once your child has outgrown it. Though not everyone knows that when they’re buying the product and paying full price. So what dazzling trick can help buyers overcome the high price hurdle?
There are so many people selling baby products online. How to stand out in the noise is a difficult challenge. If you are not a manufacturer of a product line, then the chances of success will be even lower.
So what can you do to stand out?
Well, how about telling the soon to be or current parent, what they’ll look to make back once they sell on their product in a very buoyant second hand baby market?
A US baby product company called Rebelstork have introduced a ‘REV Resale Pricing Tool’ that provides a simple calculator tool. By determining the age and condition of the product it can provide the user with a suggested sell on value.
People are so familiar with buying products from Facebook, Vinted, Ebay or Gumtree, that the stigma that used to be attached to buying second hand goods feels totally gone. Now it’s just common sense to pay less.
If I’m spending £500 on a buggy, use it for 2 years, and look after it well, I might be able to get £250 back for it. Meaning, it really only cost me £250.
This figure looks far less daunting that the original figure, all because selling it on an online marketplace after is far easier nowadays. Rather than waiting for good weather and having to get up at 4am to do a boot sale!
Rebelstork are using the strength of the second hand market and the disappearing stigma of buying and selling second hand goods, and using it to their advantage.
Yes, they are a retailer of many items and no doubt have massive competition, but I’m yet to see another brand that has delivered something like Rev.
With the world being more sustainability conscious, selling and using second hand items is doing something positive for the environment. For many this is an extra attraction, with the main positive being the potential resale value effectively reducing that upfront cost.
Rebelstork have boasted that their tool uses AI, and they have no doubt invested into creating a database that can be used to work out the potential resale values, or at least manually inputting the prices of popular items to make this work. That’s what they are doing, going above and beyond, to stand out from the noise of thousands of other online baby product retailers.
In a world of noise, how can your brand stand out and be different? Will this inspire you to consider something similar in your industry? Is there a good second hand market for your products?
The real takeaway is to look at what Rebelstork are doing and seeing if there is an opportunity in your industry to adapt a calculator for the sell on value of your products. Or simply mind mapping ideas on how your online store can think differently to capture visitor attention.
I am impressed with the initiative and think it’s certainly worth sharing. I want to thank Rishi Rawat, for sharing his feedback on the brand in a post on LinkedIn, which you can find here.
