If you’re running Google Ads and using Enhanced Conversions to improve the accuracy of your conversion tracking, this update is important to be aware of. You may need to update your existing Tag Manager Enhanced Conversions set up, to maintain accurate tracking go forwards.

You may have read my 2024 blog post on how to set up Enhanced Conversions for Google Ads using Tag Manager. I covered the two recommended methods from Google’s documentation, for setting up both automatic and manual Enhanced Conversions.

Here is the Google documentation from my old post as a reminder:

Automatic Enhanced Conversions guidance from 2024
Manual Enhanced Conversions guidance from 2024

To simplify things, Google Tag Manager has removed one of the set up options we covered.

In this post, I’ll provide a quick update on what has changed, and how to implement your Enhanced Conversions set up in Tag Manager, if you used the method that has been now been removed.

If like me, you used the method that Google has moved to as the sole option, you shouldn’t need to change your set up.

What Has Changed In Tag Manager For Enhanced Conversions?

In my previous post on Enhanced Conversions, we covered 2 methods for creating automatic and manual enhanced conversion. These are the methods mentioned in the images I shared above. One that used the User-Provided Data Event Tag, and one that used a drop down selector within the Google Ads Conversion Tracking Tag. These could both be used in the creation of both Automatic and Manual Enhanced Conversions.

Below you can see examples of both tag types:

Edit Your Conversion Tag - Automatic

Google Ads User Provided Data Event
User-Provided Data Event Tag

As of recently, Google has removed the option to configure user-provided data for Enhanced Conversions directly within the Google Ads Conversion tag (seen in the first image). As you can see from the image below, this field has now been removed from the tag configuration.

Instead, there is now a field for restricted data processing, which you can read more about here.

Now, whether creating manual or automatic Enhanced Conversions, you must use the User-Provided Data Event tag. This tag hasn’t changed from when we looked at it in 2024.

What This Means for You?

For those already using Enhanced Conversions with Tag Manager, it’s time to review your existing setup and migrate to the User-Provided Data Event tag if you’re not already using it. This will ensure continued tracking accuracy.

If you are setting up Enhanced Conversions for the first time, you can still follow the steps in my previous post for the method that uses the User-Provided Data Event tag.

I have updated my old post to remove the redundant method.
